Nursing, becoming a doctor, lawyer, accountant, engineer, architect, teacher, to me.... are all careers and there are many more that are best pursued IF you plan on doing this for your livelihood for your whole life. Because of the length of time the above take, and money involved in school. Also.. because you can't " Fake It Until You Make It".. when you need to be in these careers whole heatedly.
That being said.. I am wondering if Cosmetology would be in this scenario? How about Pharmacy Tech? I am trying on the side to pursue my passion. My dream career so to speak. In the mean time... I need to pay the rent and all my bills. I have experienced enough in life to say.. unless you have a skill set that is only and mostly achieved and obtained by taking classes or a school program, a person is unable to live on what hourly wages are today thrown at them.. in assuming one can survive on a low wage. When this is not possible. I am trying to figure out what types of short in duration skill set..education/career, I can take that is something .. I can fake it until I make it in the career I am pursuing for life, so that I can pay the rent and bills. I read blogs on both Cosmetolgy and Pharmacy tech. I read Cosmetology takes awhile to obtain customers.. but the tips can bring in more then 15.00 an hour.. working in the right location. I thought of legal secretary.. because the pay is good. But.. the school very .. expensive as with Cosmetology. But.. I rather work independently to be honest. Pharmacy tech would be the least investment of time and cost by far. However I read that there may or may not be jobs available without experience first. Some said this is not a sustainable career over time.. because of the lower end of the wages. They make 10-14.00 an hour. However.. I am not looking for a life time career. Just a stepping stone to pay the bills and my way until my career I plan on doing my whole life.. kicks in. No matter what... I need to obtain a skill set. Just with the economy its not an easy task knowing which ones will benefit me without the huge investment. Also.. there are some places in my state that you learn Cosmetology as you go and they pay for you to take classes at a Tech College. You have to agree to work for them for a few years as an Apprentice. There is always CNA work.. but its dirty, hard and physically demanding work. Its not something I would or could enjoy. I am running out of ideas. Which would be my best bet and why? Thanks |

You're right about the jobs you've listed above. I worked as a nurse forever and I've always believed that being a nurse is what you are ... not what you do.
So far as something you can do to make money until you can achieve your "real" life kicks in, any of the choices you've noted would work. I have to say though, that a minimum wage job isn't the end of the road. If you're willing to excel at what you're assigned to do your salary will go up. There are promotions in many jobs that don't require a lifelong commitment. But I'm afraid the days of just warming a chair or showing up and keeping a job are gone, at least for the foreseeable future. |
